In the late 70's, Ray Murphy was working as the sales manager for a Seattle-area staffing firm when he realized employees weren’t getting a fair shake. Overhead was high and the contractors, the people actually generating the revenue, were getting a fairly small cut. There had to be a better way.
Ray left in 1980 to start Murphy & Associates. It was a modest beginning, to say the least. His co-founder, Donna Murphy, was the first full-time contractor. Ray did part time consulting to make ends meet.
From the beginning, Ray ran his company based on the advice of his favorite mentor: "The more you share, the more you have to share." Put into action, it meant this: Murphy & Associates would pay consultants a larger percentage of the billing rate. This would help us attract and retain better workers. In turn, that would help us build a reputation in the IT industry for supplying top-notch talent at competitive rates.
To prove to our employees that they were getting a bigger piece of the pie, Murphy & Associates did something almost no other consulting firm was doing; we showed them the billing rate. It was a risky move, but it paid off. In 1988, Murphy & Associates was recognized as an Inc 500 company for having a 315% growth rate over the previous five years.
Ray's sons Erik and Joel joined Murphy & Associates in the mid 90's, after successful careers as IT consultants. They helped the firm successfully change over from a mainframe computing orientation to a client/server and Web based focus. Today, Murphy & Associates has 6 full-time staff to support our employees. Each new staff member has been carefully picked to maintain the family feel and unique culture of the company.
